For WERWULF, that silver has been given another life.

Heretic partnered with British jewellery house From The Silver Screen, who recover silver from the processing of motion picture film that would otherwise disappear. Their laboratories work with this reclaimed material through meticulous process of recovery and refinement, and transform it into sterling silver jewelry. For this limited edition pendant, they've rendered silver recovered from the processing of the actual film used to create Robert Eggers' WERWULF.

Robert Eggers’ Werwulf is only in theaters Christmas.

In WERWULF, Robert Eggers asks us to confront something uncomfortable: the distance between the civilized self we present to the world and the primal animal that remains beneath it. The "Beast Within" pendant is designed with two identities occupying a single form. From one side, human. From the other, death. The skull itself also takes the form of memento mori, the reminder of mortality that appeared throughout medieval and early modern European art and devotional objects. Life and death occupy the same object. That duality became the foundation of the WERWULF Skull Pomander.

Set in the 13th century, the WERWULF film takes us to a time when the boundaries between the cosmetic, medicinal, spiritual and supernatural were not nearly as fixed as they are today. Fragrance could be adornment, but it could also be medicine, protection, devotion and talisman. Aromatic substances were carried close to the body. Herbs, spices, resins and perfumes were enclosed within precious vessels that eventually became known as pomanders, from the French pomme d'ambre, meaning "apple of amber."

Such objects were worn not simply to smell beautiful, but as personal instruments of protection.

Our pomander is inspired by a particularly elaborate 17th century skull pomander design. Hinged through its center, this piece opens to reveal a secret chamber for a perfumed stone that slowly diffuses its fragrance to surround the wearer with scent of the WERWULF, the beast within.

A contemporary interpretation of an ancient impulse: to carry scent as protection, adornment, memory and mystery.
