Here Beginneth
The Work
The three witnesses
The forest. The beast.
The blood.
Three fragrances bearing witness to the transformation from man to beast.
Each preserving the scent of what transpired beneath the changing moon.
For the body may forget.
But the scent remains.
CHAPTER I
Þe Wode
Hath Teth
The Forest Has Teeth
the forest. Vast,
brutal, and
indifferent.
Its frozen breath holdeth all life
in a state of arrested judgment.
It doth not observe.
It endureth.
And in enduring, it recordeth.
I • The Wode
the Fragrance
Þe Wode Hath Teth
A scent of the feral woodland itself: cold bark, damp moss, smoke in the ayre.
First Ayre
Opens with a lungful of smoke and ash, sharpened by juniper berry, like cold air drawn through a dying fire.
Herte
Pepper and carrot seed crack through resinous gurjun blossom, earthy and strange, like roots from frozen soil.
Lasting Wyrde
The forest deepens as it dries down. The result is a scent as feral as the woodland itself.
CHAPTER II
Werwulf
The Beast Within
the transformation.
Not an event, but an unveiling.
The veil of civility is torn aside,
and that which was buried
taketh up its ancient dominion.
Colde herbes bite the ayre. Wormwood riseth bitter and lunar, whispered with olde charms against the darke. Cardamom warmeth the skin like breath in winter. Elemi seeps from wounded fir bark, sharp and sacred. Deeper in the wode, the human scent beginneth to change. Smoke and leather bloom upon the skin. Castoreum and costus stir with fur, hide, and heat. Olde tales wake — of warriors in wolf-skins, walking the forest as beastes. Fir balsam bleeds from black trunks. Labdanum burneth beneath the ribs. Patchouli, vetiver, moss, and damp earth open below. Something primal moveth under the skin. Soft musks linger like the trace of fur in winter ayre.
Wer — Man.
Wulf — Wolf.
This fragrance dwelleth betwixt them: when the forest taketh the body, and the wolf waketh within.
the Fragrance
Werwulf
The scent of the beast awakening beneath human skin.
First Ayre
Animalic, earthen and intimate, Werwulf explores the threshold between man and animal: the moment when civility gives way to something older.
Herte
Skin, damp earth, root, resin and the suggestion of wet fur create a fragrance that feels bodily and unnervingly alive.
Lasting Wyrde
Rather than treating lycanthropy simply as infection or attack, the fragrance explores one of the film’s central ideas: the beast that lives within us all.
CHAPTER III
Blodwode
Blood Wood
the memory.
Fragmented. Unreliable.
Yet persistent.
Echoes cling like frost
within the hidden chambers of the mind, refusing to dissolve.
Together, they form no tale,
but a residue: impressions pressed too deeply to be undone.
Blodwode
The memory. Fragmented.
Unreliable.
Yet persistent.
We knowe the smelle of wolves. We stood here longe before men learned to feare the darke. Beneath our boughes, he came stumbling, his breath burning in the winter ayre. Salt. Leather. Living skin. His hands brushed our bark, and left a warmth that fled too soone. Then another scent entered the wode. Sharp. Bitter. Wilde. Wormwood crushed beneath unseen steppes. Resin bled from our wounded bark. Beneath it stirred something elder: fur, musk, heat. The smelle of wet leather and animal hide. The heat of flesh that was once man. Then came the sound, cloth tearing, bone cracking. The forest filled with the smelle. Iron and heat, thick in the winter ayre.
And beneath our roots,
we knew him changed.
the Fragrance
Blodwode
The forest doesn’t forget. Each leaf and piece of bark is a museum of the scent and trauma it has experienced.
First Ayre
Sharp. Bitter. Wild. Wormwood crushes beneath unseen steps.
Herte
Resin bleeds from wounded bark, and beneath the bark is something older: fur, musk and heat.
Lasting Wyrde
Wet leather and animal hide resemble the heat of flesh that was once human.
This collection presenteth itself
not as perfume, but as relic.
Olfactory shards
of something once lived,
and never wholly escaped.
For one may avert the gaze.
One may close the ear
to dreadful utterance.
Yet scent admitteth no such defense.
It trespasseth without form.
It insinuateth without leave.
And once perceived,
cannot be unperceived.
Scent is the most faithful of witnesses,
and the most merciless.
For it doth not merely recall.
It restoreth.
And in its presence,
there is no refuge.
Only the slow recognition
of what hath always lingered
just beyond the threshold
of knowing.
Discovery Set
